Last Tunnel Breakthrough
in Thuringia

The 1,490 m long 2-track Fleckenberg Tunnel between the Silberberg (7,391 m) and Massenberg (1,051 m) tunnels is part of the 107 km long new Ebensfeld-Leipzig rail route with altogether 22 tunnels totalling 41 km accounting for 38 % of the route. It is due to open in 2017. It belongs to the 500 km long new/upgraded Nuremberg-Erfurt/Halle rail route, German Unity Transport Project (VDE) No. 8.

The Fleckenberg Tunnel was embarked on in June 2011 and driven in part-excavations (crown, bench and floor).The breakthrough ceremony took place on March 6, 2012. A total of around 400,000 m³ of rock...
