The rapid demographic growth of the city of Caracas in recent years and the deterioration of the only highway connecting Venezuela‘s capital Caracas and La Guaira seaport were the main factors for the approval of the extension of Boyaca Avenue (a.k.a. the “Cota Mil”). This extension will give residents in the northeastern section of Caracas as well as residents from Guarenas and Guatire, both cities east of the capital’s metropolitan region , direct access to the Coastal highway. An important part of this extension will be the new Baralt tunnel with a length of 2.8 km.
The Portuguese construction company Teixeira Duarte, Engenharia e Construções, S.A. and the Venezuelan Precomprimido C.A pulled together their strengths to form the multinational Boyaca-La Guaira Consortium. Together they placed the winning bid for engineering, procurement and construction of the new highway project, as outlined by the Ministry of Popular Power for Terrestrial Transportation.
