“Going deep” at the 2016 InnoTrans

The new Gotthard Base Tunnel can lay claim to many things: it’s the world’s longest and deepest rail tunnel, a milestone for the environment and economy. However, first and foremost it provides impressive proof for the capabilities of Swiss and international tunnelling. This will also be displayed at the Tunnel Construction fair segment when globally active industrial concerns and market leaders present more than 460 products in the field of tunnelling at the 2016 InnoTrans in Berlin from September 20 to 23.

“Tunnel Construction” Fair Segment in Hall 5.2

The portfolio on show in Hall 5.2 at the fairgrounds ranges from construction materials and ventilation systems by way of tunnel boring machines and techniques right up to communication and safety technologies as well as cleaning systems and electric installations.

Companies that were directly engaged in building the Gotthard Base Tunnel will also be among the exhibitors at the InnoTrans in September. They include e.g. the Herrenknecht AG or Brügger HTB GmbH. Herrenknecht, a long-standing exhibitor at the InnoTrans and market leader in mechanized tunnelling technology, will present a range of products of custom-built machines. These machines are devised for applications such as traffic tunnelling or utility tunnelling. The Swiss Brügger HTB GmbH will be celebrating its debut at the InnoTrans. It was responsible for providing special systems for cleaning the Gotthard Base Tunnel. At the Berlin fairgrounds it will display a specially developed rail bed cleaning system. Other companies present in the Tunnel Construction segment include Aero-X AG from Switzerland, BöSha GmbH & Co. KG, Consilium Marine & Safety from Sweden, Korea Railroad Research Institute. Nantong Composite Material Co., Ltd, from China, Niedax GmbH & Co. KG, Pöyry and Zapp-Zimmermann GmbH.

Expert Discussions at the International Tunnel Forum

Alongside the exhibition emphasis will be trained on expert dialogue. The International Tunnel Forum promises qualified debate involving national and international experts from the industry. The Research Association for Tunnels and Transportation Facilities Inc. (STUVA) will be organizing the event for the sixth time. STUVA CEO Dr.-Ing. Roland Leucker will chair the proceedings. Two forums dealing with highly topical subjects are featured this year:

BIM – An Added Value for Tunnelling?

The use of BIM for public construction projects is already obligatory in a number of European countries. In order to foster this in Germany as well, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) published a phased plan for its introduction at the end of 2015. As from 2020, BIM is to be applied regularly for new projects that are being planned. But what added value does BIM bring for tunnelling? The forum will discuss how this planning method can be applied practically given the special general conditions of underground construction.

Underground Stations – A special Safety and Security Risk?

September 22, 2016, 2­­–4 pm
CityCube Berlin. Floor 3, M8

This forum will deal with the issue of whether underground stations are especially hazardous premises, which demands must be made on the operators of underground facilities and which measures would benefit a feeling of objective safety. Current developments in this field as well as opportunities afforded by design, which are already available for new premises or redeveloping existing ones will be gone into.
