JV Swietelsky/SSB to refurbish the old Gleinalm Tunnel

The ASFINAG has awarded a major contract to two Austrian construction companies: Swietelsky-Bau in Graz and SSB-Bau based in Carinthia will work as a joint venture to carry out the general refurbishment of the almost 40 year old Gleinalm Tunnel on the A 9 Pyhrn Autobahn in Styria. According to ASFINAG managing director Alexander Walcher, the contract volume is rather more than 76 million euros. The start of the refurbishment is already planned for the middle of September 2017 and the works should be completed by 2019.

The general refurbishment includes the replacement of the carriageway and the entire safety systems. In addition, the intermediate slab in the tunnel should be completely renewed.

The more than 8 km long Gleinalm Tunnel has been in operation since 1978 as a single-bore tunnel; in the past four years, ASFINAG has added a second bore, which was opened for traffic on 21 July 2017.
