Karawanken Tunnel Portals: Design Contest concluded

The new construction of the Karawanken tunnel is picking up speed also from an architectural point of view. The tunnel construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2017 or beginning of 2018. The tunnel portals will be architecturally redesigned after completion of the new and the refurbishment oft he existing tunnel. Hertl, an architecture firm based in Steyr, Upper Austria, won the competition, which was initiated throughout Austria by the ASFINAG. A hanging aluminium cladding in front of the portals, which from a distance appears to be soft and transparent, is included in the project...
