With a schedule of just less than two years of construction time, the ASFINAG started on the upgrading of the Plabutsch Tunnel on the A 9 Pyhrn Autobahn in Austria in December 2017. The tunnel is almost 10 km long and has now relieved the city of Graz from through traffic for 30 years. Up to 50.000 vehicles daily use the tunnel, which gained a second bore to provide two lanes in each direction in 2004. The potential impact of all this traffic having to pass through Graz was shown on 15 November, when a closure of the tunnel after an accident led to massive traffic delays.
