The Berlin U55 has travelled on the Metro section between the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin Central Station (Fig. 1) since the beginning of August 2009. Stepped-up safety precautions prevail in Metro facilities on account of high volumes of traffic and adverse environmental conditions. The applied technology has to be capable of sustaining essential installations such as emergency lighting, ventilation plants and lifts in the event of fire.
