Marieholm Tunnel – Immersed Tunnel in Gothenburg

The Marieholm Tunnel in Gothenburg is a road tunnel with three lanes per direction and an evacuation tunnel. It is devised for more than 100 years service life and is to be built as an immersed tunnel just like the 300 m long, two-track Söderström Tunnel. Towards this end, three part-sections each 100 m in length are constructed in a dry dock and then submerged in a trench excavated on the riverbed.

The COSUF Award 2015 is open to candidates

Applications for the COSUF Award 2015 in English language must be received by the ITA secretariat by 28 February 2015. Students, young professionals or researchers (less than 35 years old) are eligible if they have in the last two years completed a research work in theory and/or practice in the area of operational safety or security of underground facilities. The winner of the award is selected by the ITA COSUF steering board.

Contracts signed for the Isarco River Underpass

At the end of a public tender procedure published at the European level, BBT SE awarded the contract for executive planning and works for the Isarco River Underpass to the temporary consortium made up by Salini Impregilo S.p.A., as representing company, Strabag AG, Strabag S.p.A., Consorzio Cooperative Costruzioni CCC Società Cooperativa e Collini Lavori S.p.A.

Rastatt Tunnel commissioned

Following requests for submissions from all over Europe, the Deutsche Bahn commissioned The Tunnel Rastatt JV, with the technical management in the hands of the Ed. Züblin AG and the Hochtief AG responsible for the commercial side of things, to undertake the roughwork for the tunnel at a cost of 321 million euros. Work commenced in November 2014 with the creation of a site installation yard at Ötigheim and the building of the north groundwater trough, the access to the tunnel’s north portal.

Klang Valley MRT Project: Breakthrough of CREG EPB TBMs

Designed and manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG), the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) CR-51 and CR-50 have successfully completed two 2814 m long tunnels in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The breakthroughs of CR-51 and 50 were celebrated during the morning of October 21 and October 29, 2014 respectively at Parsar Seni Station, part of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) Project.

Tunnelling in Germany:Statistics (2013/2014),Analysis and Outlook

As in previous years, the STUVA also undertook a survey of current tunnelling projects in Germany at the turn of the year 2013/2014. The outcome is compiled in tabular form for the month of December 2013 and subsequently assessed. The table follows up its predecessors published for the years 1978 to 2013.

Maastricht’s lowered urban Motorway

By 2016 Maastricht intends relocating no less than 80 % of the existing volume of traffic on the A2 urban motorway underground. The “Groene Loper” (Green Carpet) project represents one of the biggest construction schemes ever undertaken by the city in the south-east of the Netherlands. At present a double-deck tunnel with two bores is being produced – the first of its kind in Europe. The new tunnel is largely being built by cut-and-cover, in 24 m long sections on average, with traffic flowing right past the site and close to built-up areas.

63rd Geomechanics Colloquium in Salzburg

The 63rd Geomechanics Colloquium staged by the Austrian Society for Geomechanics (ÖGG) took place on Oct. 9 + 10, 2014 in Salzburg’s Congress Centre with about 800 participants from various nations. Prof. Wulf Schubert of the TU Graz, as ÖGG chairman, hosted the Colloquium.
