Chenani Nashri Tunnel Project:Breakthrough celebrated in July

On July 13, 2015 IL & FS Transportation Networks Limited (ITNL) celebrated the breakthrough in the last section of India’s longest road tunnel between Chenani (South End) and Nashri (North End) in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Chenani Nashri Tunnel Project is part of the ambitious 286 km long four-lane widening of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

Planning Tendering Procedurefor Double-Track Development of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel

In its first phase the Lötschberg Base Tunnel was built in abbreviated form for financial political reasons and began operating in 2007. Of the 34.6 tunnel km, 21 km in the Frutigen-Ferden section are only single-track. The BLS AG invited tenders for planning the further development of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel on August 17, 2015. The planning work is due to start in 2016. It will embrace the double-track development from Ferden–Mitholz and the complete development of Ferden–Frutigen as an option.

New Bözberg Rail Tunnel: Start of Construction in Spring 2016

The Gotthard axis is to be extended to become a 4 metre corridor. This will assist freight traffic crossing the Alps to be relocated from road to rail. The biggest part-project of this scheme is to replace the Bözberg Tunnel with a new 2.6 km long two track tunnel.

Karawanken Tunnel Redevelopment

Based on the state treaty between Austria and former Yugoslavia dating from 1977, the Austrian and Slovenian motorway operators, ASFINAG and DARS agreed in mid-April 2015 to jointly finance and execute the complete redevelopment of the almost 7.9 km long Karawanken Tunnel on the Karawanken Motorway (A11).

Steinbühl Tunnel: Karst and other special Features

The 4.8 km long Steinbühl Tunnel, which is being constructed by the shotcrete method for the Alb ascent Albaufstieg on the new railway line from Wendlingen to Ulm, will see the breakthrough celebrations of its main drives this year. With more than 86 % completed as of June 2015, it is now possible to report on the special features of the tunnelling works.

Online Supervision of mechanised Tunnelling

In mechanised tunnelling, the sensor system on the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and its control system (navigation) as well as surveying and precast segment production all record a great amount of varied data. The analysis, visualisation and monitoring of this data represents an important instrument for efficient control of mechanised tunnelling.

Interview with Prof. Dr. Nuh Bilgin

The Turkish Tunnelling Society (TTS) was established in August 2012 in response to a growing demand from the national tunnelling industry. Since then TTS has grown with tremendous speed: The society has 700 individual members and 47 cooperate members. On occasion of the Tunnel Expo Turkey in late August, tunnel editor Marvin Klostermeier had the chance to talk with TTS chairman Prof. Dr. Nuh Bilgin about tasks and objectives of the young tunneling society and the prospects of tunneling in Turkey over the next few years.

Metro Tunnel DrivesMecidiyeköy-Mahmutbey

The district of Gaziösmanpaşa is located to the north-west of Istanbul’s historic city centre. From there the quickly growing metro system for the city of 14 million will be augmented by a further 17.5 km of underground railway with 15 stations. Work on the new Mecidiyeköy–Mahmutbey Metro line began in March 2014 planned by the Yuksel Proje engineering office and executed by a joint venture comprising the turkish companies Gülermak, Kolin and Kalyon (GKK).

Breakthrough at theEurasia Tunnel –“Welcome to Europe”

After 16 months of tunnelling under the Bosphorus Strait a Herrenknecht Mixshield with an excavation diameter of 13.7 m on August 22, 2015 pierced the target shaft wall of the Eurasia Tunnel on Istanbul’s European side exactly to plan. The invited guests witnessed the finale of an exceptional construction achievement. Never before has such a large tunnel been built underground under such complex and extreme conditions.
