In mid November 2010 Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, Tunnelling Division, a member of the BAM TBI Joint Venture, was awarded the 208 Mio. Euro contract for the construction of the Sluiskil Tunnel under the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal in the Province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. The client is BV KanaalKruisingSluiskil (KKS) on behalf of the Government of the Province of Zeeland.
The Sluiskil Tunnel is designed as a twin-tube bored tunnel, each tube being approx. 1,150 m long. The deepest point lies 33 m under sea level. The total length of the tunnel is 1,330 m. The external diameter of the tubes is approx. 11 m and is thus comparable to the Westerschelde Tunnel, which was also built by a joint venture of which Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG was a member. Tunnelling is scheduled to begin in 2013. The contract also includes the construction of roads and two bridges. The whole project will be completed by mid 2015.
