Feldwisch passes baton
Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Feldwisch hands over the DB Netz AG’s Major Projects Division to Dipl.-Ing. Heinz Ehrbar
Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Feldwisch turned 65 in June 2013, which would enable him to enter a phase of well-deserved retirement. This marked the end of a professional career involving taking executive responsibility since 1978 with the Road Construction Authority of Lower Saxony and the Deutsche Bundesbahn by way of the Deutsche Reichsbahn to the Deutsche Bahn AG. From 2004 he was in charge of planning, financing and executing major rail infrastructure projects. During his period at the helm, important projects such as the upgraded Hamburg – Berlin route, the Berlin Hauptbahnhof and the North – South Corridor, the new Nuremberg – Erfurt – Halle/Leipzig route, the upgraded/new Karlsruhe – Basle route, Stuttgart 21 as well as the new Wendlingen – Ulm route were tackled. On April 1, 2013, he handed over responsibility for the DB Netz AG’s Major Projects Division to Dipl.-Ing. Heinz Ehrbar. However he will stay on in an advisory capacity at the wish of the DB Netz AG’s board until the end of 2014 and in this connection concentrate on securing a new generation of engineers. Since 2007, Feldwisch has belonged to the STUVA board and will continue in this role.
Dipl.-Ing. Heinz Ehrbar, who until recently successfully took charge of planning and executing the constructional engineering for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, tackled planning and executing major projects for hydro power plants and transport tunnels after completing his studies as a construction engineer at ETH Zurich. He was involved with the Gotthard Base Tunnel as from 1996; fulfilling leading executive roles on behalf of the client as from 2001.
The STUVA team would like to wish Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Feldwisch all the best on turning 65. However, we have no intention of simply letting him go off into retirement and hope we shall continue to enjoy his extraordinary active, imaginative and prudent support.
STUVA Research Project Results on “Rail Noises” published in Book Form
STUVA staffer Dr.-Ing. Friedrich Krüger has published new and comprehensive research results on measuring, evaluating and reducing rail noises in the Transport and Technology series of publications.
Inevitable noise and vibration emissions represent a central and omnipresent topic especially for transport companies. The noise emissions caused by rail traffic are regarded ever more frequently as bothersome and disturbing by passengers and local residents. As a consequence, transport companies find themselves faced with the challenge of reducing such emissions in a targeted manner on a lasting basis. In this way, track-bound transport systems will be more readily accepted again. In the scope of a research project sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Science captioned “Joint Project for quieter Traffic, Stick-Slip Noises – Development of mature and effective Measures to reduce Wheel and Rail Squealing” the basic causes as well as the possibilities for reducing such noises were examined in depth and assessed. With this latest publication, the internationally recognised expert for noise and vibration protection, as publisher, Dr.-Ing. Friedrich Krüger, responsible for STUVA’s noise and vibration department, presents invaluable new approaches and important results for determining causes of disturbing squealing noises produced by rail traffic and how these can be suppressed. Volume 97 in the Transport and Technology series provides essential knowledge in this field. In addition to the results from the research project, it contains contributions from transport companies, engineering offices and industry thus providing affected companies with basic solutions for eradicating acoustic problems.

Dr.-Ing. Friedhelm Blennemann turns 70
Dr.-Ing. Friedhelm Blennemann celebrated his 70th birthday in May 2013. He began his career with the STUVA in 1968 and was appointed deputy CEO in 1995. He stepped down in 2005 upon reaching retirement age. The STUVA team would like to congratulate him on the occasion of his birthday. We are delighted that Dr. Blennemann still actively supports STUVA’s activities and will devote his attention to specific projects for a long time to come.
