On 18 August 2017, Prof. Dr.-Ing.
Dr.-Ing. E. h. Heinz Duddeck, long-term professor of structural engineering at the TU Braun-
schweig and excellent tunnelling expert, died at the age of 89. Only six days before, I talked to him and his wife Marianne on the telephone and to cheer him up, relived episodes from our common experience – looking back, this was a farewell to a companion of many years. There are few people who you know professionally and personally over five decades; for me, Heinz Duddeck was one of these.
