STUVA investigates the Efficacy of Ground Caution Lights at Urban Railway Pedestrian Crossings in Cologne

In recent years serious accidents have occurred frequently at pedestrian traffic light crossings spanning the urban railway tracks in Cologne. The reasons for accidents involving pedestrians or cyclists crossing at such points are presumably caused among other things by a lack of attention, e.g. as a result of using a phone or listening to music via headphones. As a result the Cologne City Council decided in late 2011 to equip selected track crossings with LED ground caution lights within the framework of a pilot project.
