Egypt – EPB Tunnel Boring Machine for Metro Cairo

NFM Technologies has just signed a contract for the supply of a 9.46 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine for the second phase of the Cairo metro line 3. The contract, signed with the Joint Venture made up of Vinci (project lead), Bouygues, Arabco and Orascom, includes the conception and design of the tunnel boring machine, as well as the manufacture, assembly, tests in the factory and on-site, plus part of the transport. The machine will be manufactured at the NFM Technologies Le Creusot plant in France. It is expected to be ready to leave the factory in June 2010.
The tunnel boring machine will excavate the 5138 m linking the stations of Cairo Fair, Stadium and Kolleyet El Banat. The soil is made up mainly of clay, sand and sandstone. At the client‘s request, the tunnelling machine will be designed specifically so that it can later be adapted to “slurry” mode.
When complete, line 3, which will have 29 stations spread over 33 km, will cross the city from East to West and will provide a link with Cairo airport.
