Silvertown Tunnel: Final Breakthrough

Using the largest tunnel boring machine in the UK, miners from Riverlinx CJV completed driving the second tunnel for London’s Silvertown project ahead of schedule at the end of July 2023. London is building the Silvertown Tunnel in the east of the city, the first newly constructed underground road link between the two banks of the Thames in over 30 years.

Final Mont Cenis Tunnelling Contract Awarded

On 31 August 2023, the Board of Directors of TELT (Tunnel Euralpin Lyon Turin) signed the contract for the construction of the Italian section of the Mont Cenis Base Tunnel. This completes the awarding of all works for the excavation of the 57.5 km railway tunnel under the Alps from Lyon to Turin, co-financed by Europe, France, and Italy.

Major Rehabilitation Works at the Hauenstein Base Tunnel

In September 2023, the SBB started the fundamental overhaul of the Hauenstein Base Tunnel. The tunnel vault and technical installations of the railway tunnel will be renovated. This work will last until autumn 2026, with interruptions in the summer and at the end of the year.

Ibbenbüren Mine Water Drainage Tunnel – Project Presentation and Experience After 24 Months

In October 2021, construction work began on the new mine water drainage tunnel (MWDT) in the area of Germany’s northernmost coal mine in Ibbenbüren, which was closed in 2018. The costly pumps of the mine water drainage system have now been switched off and the mine water is to rise to a height of +63 m NHN (= meters above standard zero) and then be discharged via the new drainage tunnel to the mine water treatment plant at the Gravenhorst site, which is also to be newly constructed. This article presents the project task and reports on the status of the planning and construction work after a construction period of 24 months.

Tunnel Construction West and Main Station in Munich: Current Status of Ongoing Works

The work of the joint venture ARGE Tunnel Hauptbahn­hof (ATH) for the west tunnel construction and at Munich Central Station is making progress. The launch shaft in front of the Donnersberger Bridge will be ready for the TBM launch by around early summer 2024, work on the RS 3 rescue shaft has begun, and at the central station level E-2 is being excavated since September 2023. The work of ARGE Marienhof was already presented in detail in tunnel 4/2022 and the overall project in tunnel 2/2023. Marienhof in Munich: Construction Work on the Access Structure in Full Swing

Work on the Marienhof station in the heart of Munich is going according to plan. The special civil engineering with the construction of the diaphragm walls and primary supports as well as the construction of the cover had already been completed by the time of the presentation of ARGE Marienhof in tunnel 4/2022. 2nd Munich S-Bahn Main Line: Tender for the Eastern Section Until the End of 2023

With around 840 000 passengers per day, the Munich S-Bahn is one of the largest public transport systems in Germany. Opened as early as 1972 for the Olympic Games, the 11.3 km long main line has reached its capacity limit, as all S-Bahn trains have to pass under Munich city center through a tunnel. This problem is now being tackled by the construction of the approximately 10 km long 2nd main line. The article in tunnel 5/2023 presents the eastern part, award unit 733 with the tunnel from Marienhof up to and including deep-level East Station, (Ostbahnhof tief). The tender is expected to be issued by the end of 2023.
