Compact Tunnel Excavator With Dual Diesel and Electric Drive

Schöller Special Machines (SSM) is one of the world‘s leading manufacturers of tunnel excavators and special machines that can be modified for specific applications according to customer requirements. The SSM product range includes tunnel excavators, tunnel excavation and loading machines, tunnel wheel loaders, Volvo compact machines and customised Volvo construction machines for exceptional applications.

The SSM tunnel excavators are based on proven Volvo machines that are converted and upgraded for tough tunnel and mining applications. The current product range includes seven models from 7 to 47 tonnes operating weight, with a choice of diesel or electric drive. The electrically powered excavators enable zero-emission operation on site, improve air quality for workers and help reduce the cost of ventilation.

SSM has developed the Volvo ECR58-T and ECR88-T compact tunnel excavators especially for use in small tunnel profiles. In addition to diesel or electric drive, these machines are also available with the SSM Twin-Drive (diesel and electric drive). In addition, they are obtainable as conventional compact excavators for the construction industry.

The Twin-Drive excavators can be operated with full
diesel hydraulics as usual. The additionally integrated electric drive allows emission-free continuous operation on site, without restrictions from limited battery capacity or charging times. A cable drum is installed to provide mobility of the electrically driven excavator on site. SSM has many years of experience with this dual drive. The Twin-Drive concept can as well be used in other Volvo excavators.

SSM‘s goal is to improve the sustainability, efficiency and productivity of its customers and partners through its machines and services. In addition to the well-known tunnel excavators, SSM, as a Volvo SAS (Special Application Solutions) partner, modifies Volvo standard construction machines according to customer requirements. For this reason, the conversion of Volvo excavators to zero-emission electric drive or Twin-Drive (diesel and electric drive) is also available for these machines. Volvo offers a choice of different excavator sizes with electric or dual-drive on request, up to the large EC750 and EC950 models. These customised machines reduce emissions in exceptional applications.
