As part of Norway‘s largest infrastructure project E39 Rogfast, the State Road Administration (Statens vegvesen) has awarded sub-project E03 Boknafjord Tunnel to a consortium consisting of Implenia (80%) and Stangeland Maskin (20%). At 27 km, the Boknafjord Tunnel will be the longest and, with a maximum depth of 392 m below sea level, also the deepest underwater tunnel in the world.

The contract volume amounts to approx. 373 million euros. Subsection E03 includes an 8.6 km long twin tunnel and a 125 m long above-ground road section.  Work on sub-project E03 has already started in January 2023; construction is scheduled for completion in 2030. Implenia is responsible for the excavation as well as the lining of the tunnel. Stangeland Maskin will be responsible for transporting the excavated material and building the road, including the drainage work.

The two partners Implenia and Stangeland Maskin have already worked together successfully on previous projects: They have previously built the Eiganes Tunnel together and are currently working as a joint venture on the E39 Lyngdal project.

Sub-project E04 was also awarded in December 2022. This northernmost section of the Boknafjord Tunnel is being built by the Swedish company Skanska. It is a twin tunnel that will involve Skanska building 18.5 km of road in the tunnel and another 2 km above ground. The contract is worth around 460 million euros. Construction is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2023 and be completed by the end of 2029. The remaining middle tunnel lot E02 has not yet been awarded.
