Stationary jaw crushers for a landmark infrastructure Project

With the construction of the Sisikon Tunnel as part of the Axen project, one of Central Switzerland’s most significant infrastructure developments is taking shape along the national road between Brunnen and Flüelen. Lot 200 of the Sisikon Tunnel forms a key component of the N4 "New Axen Road" project and will significantly improve both road safety and the reliability of this important north-south transport link.

For the processing of the excavated rock material, the Axen Consortium (ARGE Axen) has chosen proven Swiss crushing technology from Seedorf: GIPO GISLER POWER AG is supplying two stationary jaw crushers of the type GIPO ST B 1490 for use on the construction site.

Tunnel excavation projects, particularly those involving drill-and-blast methods as used at Axen, generate large volumes of rock material that are unsuitable for transport via conveyor systems in their original size. To ensure the continuous removal of material from the tunnel, the rock must first be reduced to a conveyable size. This is where GIPO’s stationary crushing plant comes into operation. By processin
g the excavated material directly within the tunnel, transport distances are minimised and valuable resources can be utilised efficiently.

Efficient processing of excavated material
The GIPO ST B 1490 has been specifically designed for demanding stationary applications. Its robust construction and high performance enable the cost-effective processing of large volumes of material under challenging conditions. The plant is engineered to deliver reliable and consistent performance, even during continuous long-term operation.

Requirements for the plant concept
The processing of the excavated material required a plant concept that combines high throughput capacity with maximum efficiency. This includes a generously sized feed hopper capable of receiving up to 30 m³ of excavated material directly from a dumper truck. Another key element of the concept is a high-performance pre-screening system, where oversize and undersize material are separated before the crushing process begins. This ensures that only material requiring size reduction is fed into the crusher, reducing wear and increasing the overall efficiency and economic performance of the plant.

Material size reduction is carried out by a jaw crusher featuring an inlet opening of 1,330 x 900 mm. The crusher is capable of reliably reducing feed material sizes of up to 800 mm to a size suitable for conveyor transport. The plant concept is complemented by a conveying system designed for maximum availability, ensuring a continuous and uninterrupted material flow. With this solution, ARGE Axen benefits from a powerful and cost-effective system for processing excavated material efficiently and reusing it as a valuable raw material.

Forward-looking installation planning
In addition to technical performance, factors such as operational reliability and durability played a key role in the selection of the plant. Installation was carried out on a just-in-time basis, without any interim storage on the construction site. A five-day installation window had originally been scheduled. However, thanks to optimal site conditions and forward-looking production and installation planning, the first of the two stationary jaw crushers was successfully commissioned after only three days.
The plants will remain in operation for 22 and 42 months respectively and are expected to process around one million tonnes of excavated material during this period. As such, they form a central part of the material processing operation for the construction of the Sisikon Tunnel.
