Rail Technology in the Gotthard Base Tunnel

In May 2010 the installation of the rail technical equipment was scheduled to commence in the western bore between Bodio and Faido at the Gotthard Base Tunnel’s south portal. The rail tunnel will be completely equipped and ready to cope with rail services by 2017. In this way the final stage in accomplishing this project of the century has been embarked on.
The rail technology embraces all components and systems, which belong to the “actual rail technical system”: the track, electric installations for supplying power for the rail technology and the tunnel, rail power installations for traction current, Telecom equipment, safety and automation installations. These facilities will enable rail services in the 2 single-track tunnels of the Gotthard Base Tunnel and link up the new tracks with the existing railway network.
