The tunnel is part of the “Große Wendlinger Kurve” on the new Stuttgart–Ulm line. The contract, worth a total of approx. 40 million euros, includes not only the conventional excavation and blasting of the tunnel, but also the construction of approx. 350 m of open track.

The “Große Wendlinger Kurve” will run parallel to the already constructed “Kleine Wendlinger Kurve” and create a connection between the Neckartalbahn from the direction of Metzingen, Reutlingen and Tübingen and the new Stuttgart–Ulm line. The section is part of the planning approval section 2.1a/b of the new Wendlingen–Ulm line. Construction of the Wendlingen Tunnel is scheduled to begin in 2023 and be completed in 2025.
