“There’s a Better Way” – Half a Century of Progress in Mechanized Tunnelling

One of Martin Herrenknecht’s earliest insights into mechanized tunnelling still drives him today: “There’s a better way.” This insight originally referred to a tunnel boring machine from an American manufacturer that Martin Herrenknecht worked with from 1971 to 1975 as a young engineer and director of the mechanical engineering service on the Seelisberg Tunnel project in Switzerland. From then on, Martin Herrenknecht would describe the mountain, the tunnel, the machine, and the team as the origin of his entrepreneurial career.
