East Section of Biel Bypass:
Breakthrough at Längholz Tunnel

One of the final gaps in the Swiss motorway network is to be closed with the Biel Bypass in the Canton of Berne. The project will link the T6 from Berne with the A16 and A5 and is split into 2 construction sections, east and west (Fig.). The last tunnel for the 5 km long east section has been broken through whereas the 5 km section undertunnelling the city area is still being accomplished.

The east section includes the 1,230 m long Büttenberg Tunnel in the north east and the 2,330 m long Längholz Tunnel in the south west, both with twin tubes 11 m in diameter with segmental lining (30 cm; 6+1)...
