International Conference: Beyond a Tunnel Vision 2020

November 27, 2020, Fokker Terminal, The Hague

In 2018 four organizations of both Belgium and the Netherlands hosted the first European conference on tunnel renovations. After the success of this conference with over 350 visitors and the importance to have a joint European position, the organizers decided on establishing a series of European tunnel conferences on renovation, taking place every other year. The second conference “Beyond a Tunnel Vision” will be held on November 27, 2020 in the Fokker Terminal, The Hague, Netherlands.

Beyond a Tunnel Vision is focused on the joint challenges in the infrastructure network of Europe. How can tunnels be renovated in a clever way? To which extent can they be updated with minor impact on traffic? How can renovation be used to diminish energy consumption and environmental impact of a tunnel? In what way can digitalization processes contribute to an efficient renovation? These questions will be addressed in plenary sessions and interactive workshops.

With the support and cooperation of nine countries united in the EUTF (European Underground and Tunnel Forum) the Dutch centre for underground construction, the COB, has composed a position paper on tunnels in Europe. This paper addresses the challenges that lay ahead and the need for a European tunnel programme. The Beyond a Tunnel Vision conference is an important stepping-stone towards this programme.

The conference is organized by ABTUS BVOTS (Belgium), IE-net (Belgium), KIVI TTOW (Netherlands), the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR) and the COB (Netherlands). It is endorsed by EUTF and ITA COSUF.
