Mainline Tunnel in Bologna in Operation

The Italian railway operator RFI opened the 2 new high-speed links between Bologna and Florence and Bologna and Milan on June 22, 2012. As a result, regional traffic has been separated from the high-speed network. The 17.8 km long link consists of a 10 km long, 2-bore tunnel, largely excavated by mechanised means and an open section, 75 % of which runs over bridges. The new station for the high-speed trains is in the basement of the existing Bologna Central Station and possesses 4 tracks, 2 for through trains and 2 with platforms; they are were opened in December 2012.⇥G.B.
