New Ebensfeld-Erfurt Railway Line: Kulch Tunnel

The 2-track Kulch Tunnel with a length of 1,331 m in the Lichtenfels district is part of the 107 km long new railway line (NBS) between Ebensfeld and Erfurt, (with altogether 22 tunnels with 41 km length = 38.4%), which belongs to the 500 km long new and upgraded Nuremberg-Erfurt/Halle route of German Unity Transport Project (VDE) 8 involving investments totalling around 10 bill. euros. Following the Reitersberg, Lichtenholz and Eierberge tunnels work has now commenced on this tunnel in Bavaria.

The Kulch Tunnel is being driven by mining means with shotcrete support from north to south and lined with a pressure water tight in situ concrete inner shell. The excavated material is largely used in the vicinity for further building of the route and surplus amounts for improving the landscape. The tunnel was started in mid-October 2010. Investment costs amount to around 41 mill. euros.  G.B.
