Gotthard Road Tunnel to be redeveloped

The 17 km long Gotthard Road Tunnel possesses a 2-lane bore operating bidirectionally with a parallel negotiable evacuation tunnel. It was opened in 1980. During the next few years the surfacing and the lining for the tunnel walls as well as the ventilation plant have to be renewed, which is likely to cost some 0.5 bill. CHF (340 mill. euros).

Although the redevelopment concept – either section-by-section or total closure with the construction of a second tunnel bore – has still to be decided, the Alpine Initiative has already put forward counter-proposals relating to the building of a second...
