Replacement of the St. Andrä Tunnel on the A 10 Tauern Motorway
In August 2025, preliminary work began away from the main carriageway for the replacement of the almost 40-year-old St. Andrä underpass on the A 10 Tauern motorway. Demolition of the first half of the structure then began in mid-September. Traffic was diverted to the Salzburg-bound carriageway for this purpose.

The entire project is planned to take place exclusively from mid-September to Ascension Day in May of the following year, with work on the new tunnel taking place directly on the main carriageway. This will ensure that two lanes in each direction will be open to traffic as normal from the busy spring and summer months onwards. The first construction phase is scheduled for completion on May 13, 2026, followed by construction work off the route until mid-September 2026.
Completion in Summer 2028
By the time of overall completion in summer 2028, not only will the 470 m long tunnel be newly built and equipped with the latest safety features. Two new operational buildings will also be constructed, and the main carriageway will be renovated over a length of one kilometer, as will the Seebach bridge north of the underpass. During the renovation of the open-air section from the Ossiachersee junction to the Villach junction starting in September 2026, ASFINAG will also construct four new water protection facilities.
The new tunnel is necessary due to extensive structural damage that was discovered during inspections. Simply renovating the existing structure would have been more costly and less economical. In total, ASFINAG is investing just under 38 million euros in the renewal of this section of the A 10.
