4–6 June: Swiss Tunnel Congress 2019

The Swiss Tunnelling Society will stage the Swiss Tunnel Congress (STC) for the 18th time this year. From June 4 to 6, 2019, the STC will be held in Lucerne’s Culture and Convention Centre (KKL) in its tried-and-tested form involving a colloquium, congress and exhibition together with evening events and technical visits. The location for the gala dinner is new: “It promises to provide even better interaction among the guests and will also be even more appealing to our young tunnellers”, insists Stefan Maurhofer, the Swiss Tunnelling Society president.

The STC remains one of the most significant platforms for clients, planners, engineers, suppliers, service providers, contractors and industry. Contacts can be established in an informal atmosphere, and visitors have the opportunity to find out more about innovations and selected tunnel projects from home and abroad.

The congress programme featuring remarkable projects and outstanding speakers offers topical reports on designing and executing rail, metro and road tunnels as well as hydro power plants. Contractual aspects and lessons learnt from projects are also dealt with.

The field trips on the final day involve the Gubrist Tunnel, the Riedberg Tunnel, the Küssnacht Bypass, the LEB railway tunnel in Lausanne, the CERN and the Tunnel des Nations in Geneva.

Colloquium – material-technological Innovations

The Swiss Tunnel Colloquium on June 4 deals with the subject of “Material-technological Innovations in Tunnelling”. In contrast to digitalisation, this interesting topic has not attracted all that much attention in recent years. As a consequence, the colloquium explicitly examines the development of building materials. Following an introduction devoted to research at universities in the field of building materials and digital manufacture, the focus turns to ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and the application of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in tunnelling. Further reports concentrate on the application of various fibres in concrete structures and the development of injection technology. The colloquium will be rounded off with a look at the future: Just where will 3D printing technology lead us? Will we print our tunnels in future? Or only parts of them?

The colloquium will be organised jointly together with the STS young members (STSym) – as was the case last year.
