Special regulations have to be observed with regard to safe railway operation while carrying out work such as pipe-jacking or tunnelling under railway tracks. Towards this end, what is known as safetoring must be undertaken by means of a suitable measuring system and method. Safetoring is (deformation) monitoring with directly coupled measurement data evaluation so that the existing track position and the availability of the infrastructure can be assessed at any time, thus enabling direct intervention in the railway and construction activities should the limit or alarm values be exceeded.
On the Berne-Olten-Zurich railway line in Switzerland, the stretch between Gretzenbach and Wöschnau, which is the sole remaining twin-track section, forms a bottleneck. This situation is to be rectified by late 2020 by widening the line between Olten and Aarau to provide four tracks. This upgrade will increase the route’s availability and capacity as well as it will attain more flexibility. We reported on the 3.1 km long Eppenberg Tunnel in issue 8/2017 of tunnel. This article thus merely provides a brief summary of the overall project and concentrates on the findings obtained from the construction sections already completed as well as the current status.
In the event of a fire in an underground transport station, smoke gas flows are mostly cleared to ground level through the entrances and exits. This not only pollutes the escape and rescue routes inside the station with smoke gases but also the assembly places above ground, surrounding buildings and potential working areas for the emergency services. In the Orpheus research project, possibilities have been investigated of minimising the pollution above ground through the layout of the exits and an intentional control of the smoke gases.
