Planning Contract

Hamburg Hochbahn plans to construct the U5 East with ZPP Ingenieure and STUVA

The next major construction site in Hamburg is almost upon us, for planning is due to start immediately for the eastern construction section of the new U 5 metro line. This section will involve more than 7 km in tunnels running from Bramfeld in the east to City North, including five new underground stations. Planning will be backed by an intensive dialogue with local residents from various parts of the city in order to provide information and receive suggestions from the public.

The general planning contract for this section was signed in early July between the Hamburg Hochbahn and ZPP Ingenieure. Alongside other associated partners, the STUVA is to be responsible for the plans for noise and vibration protection in this partially densely-populated urban area. The STUVAtec will draft the fire protection concepts for the underground stations as well as the safety concept for the running tunnels. It will also undertake fire simulations, evacuation calculations and if need be, the dimensioning of smoke removal and compressed air systems. The first construction section is due to be started in 2021.

The total U5 project with the subsequent route extension towards the west represents the most important single urban construction scheme for the next decade for the ever growing hanseatic city. In order to preclude future traffic gridlock the U5 project will link the most significant potential areas of high transport to the west and east of the Alster as well as existing large residential quarters with the city centre – at 90 second intervals using automated unmanned trains. In its final state the total route will be over 30 km long and run almost completely underground. As a result, the U5 will extend the Hochbahn’s present network length by one third.
