St. Pölten Bypass: Work starts on Pummersdorf Tunnel

The 3,485 m long, twin-track Pummersdorf Tunnel is the last one to be tackled by mining means via drill+blast as part of upgrading the western route (Westbahn) forming 4 tracks between Vienna and Linz. Cut-and-cover is applied in the portal zones. The tunnel runs from roughly some 500 m behind the St. Pölten junction to Föllerndorf. The ÖBB commissioned the Alpine construction company to carry out the project. The investment costs for the tunnel and a 12.5 km long connecting section will amount to 75 million euros.
