Ceneri Base Tunnel: Swiss Supreme Court confirms Railway Infrastructure Awards

The Swiss Federal Supreme Court has upheld two appeals against decisions of the Swiss Federal Administrative Court of March 2014 in connection with the award of railway infrastructure systems for the Ceneri Base Tunnel. The judgements of the Federal Administrative Court have been annulled. The original decisions of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd (ATG) for the awards are confirmed.

Herrenknecht AG has developed a next generation of the rodless shaft enlargement machines that have been established on the market for decades as so-called V-Mole technology. Herrenknecht worked closely together with two very experienced companies highly renowned in the mining industry, Thyssen Schachtbau and Murray & Roberts Cementation, to update and adapt the technology to current conditions and requirements. The result is the SBE (Shaft Boring Machine for Shaft Enlargement). It facilitates high sinking speeds and maximum working safety for shaft boring using the pilot borehole.

Main Beam Machines finish Southeast Asia’s longest Tunnel

Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur is a humid tropical metropolis with millions of inhabitants, but fresh water is still in demand. A new tunnel was commissioned by the Malaysian Ministry of Energy, Green Technology, and Water (KeTTHA), drawing water from the rainforest river Semantan and into the capital to address projected shortages for domestic and industrial use. In 2014, three 5.23 m (17.16 ft) Robbins Main Beam TBMs successfully completed excavation of the Pahang Selangor Raw Water Tunnel, also the longest tunnel in Southeast Asia. with 44.6 km (27.7 mi), passing through the Titiwangsa mountain range under cover as high as 1246 m (4087 ft).

World Tunnel Congress and ITA Annual Meeting in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil

Some 1400 participants from 52 countries got together from May 9 to 14, 2014 in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil on the occasion of the 40th Annual Meeting of the ITA – International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association – in conjunction with the 2014 World Tunnel Congress. The Congress organized by the Brazilian Tunnelling Committee (CBT) bore the motto “Tunnels for a better Life”. 52 of the 71 ITA member countries were present in Foz do Iguaçu. The quota of 82 % attained at the previous gathering in Geneva last year thus dropped to 73 %.
