Renovation of the Horchheim Tunnel

This article deals with the renovation of the Horchheim Tunnel in Koblenz (Germany). The existing tunnel with a length of 576 m was put into operation in 1902 and was fully renovated between 2021 and 2023. The route on which the tunnel is located was completely closed for the renovation. As part of the renewal, the tunnel cross-section was widened in order to fulfil current operational and safety requirements. After the tunnelling work was completed, a reinforced concrete tunnel lining was installed.

1 Importance of Tunnel Renovations at Deutsche Bahn

In addition to the major challenges posed by the many new construction projects with a high proportion of tunnels, Deutsche Bahn (DB) must also maintain the tunnel structures on existing lines and replace them where necessary. DB currently operates around 750 tunnels with a total length of approximately 600 km in its rail network.
