Detecting potential Fire Sources at the Karawanken Tunnel

The Swiss specialists for optical traffic data collation Sick System Engineering AG have developed a detection system for preventing tunnel fires. The thermal portal system enables potentially dangerous vehicles to be identified in advance without impeding the flow of traffic. The German DIAS Infrared GmbH from Dresden produces the infrared cameras integrated in the system. The almost 8 km long Karawanken Tunnel between Austria and Slovenia is operated by the Austrian ASFINAG infrastructure company. The single-bore road tunnel was fitted with the thermal portal early detection system in 2013.
